STONE RAM NO LONGER PROVIDE SERVICES FOR CATMAN. WHILE OUR FOUNDERS HELPED TO CREATE THE CATMAN TOOLS AND PROCEDURES BACK IN 2012, OUR INVOLVEMENT SINCE 2014 HAS BEEN TO SUPPORT ITS USE BY PROVIDING MANUAL WORKAROUNDS TO ANY ISSUES AND LIMITATIONS. AS NETBACKUP HAS EVOLVED, ITS NEW FEATURES AND CHANGES HAVE REQUIRES NEW WORKAROUNDS TOO, UNFORTUNATELY THE UNDERLYING BIG-BANG APPROACH THAT CATMAN USES HAS MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO ADAPT OUR RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM THE GRANULAR APPROACH THAT TRANZMAN USES TO PROVIDE WORKABLE SOLUTIONS AS WE DON'T EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUES.
The Founders of Stone Ram were instrumental in the creation of the CATMAN tools and the migration processes and procedures with Symantec, back in 2012.
Catman is however a "BIG BANG" approach to NetBackup migrations This "BIG BANG" approach can be very effective in many situations, although not all.
- It can require extensive downtime for the migration of large environments, as the migration is perfromed with source and target environments "down".
- It is "awkward" if you are looking to split an environment (it effectivly "clones" the catalog and then you have to clean up (expire) any data that isn't required, which is both time consuming, and increases RISK.
- If a migration Fails, the process of reverting and restarting requires a lot of duplicated effort.
Since forming Stone Ram in 2014, we no longer have any involvement in the development or enhancement of Catman.
If you are interested in an alternative to catman that provides these additional features, either as a our NetBackup Transitioning Service, or as a software solution Tranzman for NetBackup please contact us to discuss,
